This is a great idea. It's like a photo album version of those board books you buy for babies.

Hildi, Do you know what your parents used to glue down the photos? I'm always suspicious of the adhesives, wonder if they really last over time? And did the photos stay stuck down over the years, or did they have to be re-glued?

Did your parents just use plain cardboard? It looks nice and stiff in the photo, like maybe they used that "chipboard" that is used to mail things in envelopes that they want to keep stiff. ???

I'm guessing from the brown streaking on the exposed board that they used rubber cement. The pictures were falling off and I had to re-adhere them. Never use rubber cement for anything, it will discolor and the adhesion will fail in several years. Ideally dry mounting would work great, but few of us have access to the equipment. A good alternative would be an archival dry adhesive like an ATG tape or Gudy O.

Work with an oversized board and then trim up to the picture, this will make it much easier to position a large photo accurately. Or use an oversized print you plan to crop, mount it to the board and trim the overhang print against the board edge.

The board is pretty thick a good match to this thickness would be a .080 (2mm) bookbinders board or a 6 ply mat board.

I bet you can get these materials at a good frame shop or a great resource is Talas in NYC, talasonline.com

I just found out a very cool fact about the second picture with the three mod ladies sitting on the floor around a coffee table. My mom remembered that the picture was taken during Kennedy's inauguration. Only one friend owned a TV back then, so they gathered at her home to watch. I do love that surfboard shaped coffee table.

This is such a good idea. I am going to try it first on a smaller level. I also think it would be worth considering putting a sealant over the pictures. Thanks for sharing!
