lol, kelli, you know my secret shame! i have loose photo prints stashed all over my place, too. maybe even worse, i have some in old crappy photo albums, the kind with the plastic sheet that covers the photos and sticks down to a glue directly on the page, which now looks like brownish lines between the photos. that can't be good. but transferring everything to photo boxes is a great solution. even if i never get around to getting all the photos into new albums, at least the archival boxes are a good way to store them. thanks :)

Kelli, I'm interested to know how many Havana boxes you have and in what colors.

I find it difficult to file prints chronologically coz *time* is something I try to stay away from. So many things happen in a year and it will be like multiplying a messy collection of prints in smaller versions.

You have a black and a red Havana box here in this photo, are these the only two colors you have? I love the idea to use Havana to decorate my home and invite curiosity.

Patrick, I'm so glad you asked cuz I'm curious about the same things. A couple years ago I borrowed an idea from someone else to use the built-in cabinet in my house for photo albums, photo boxes and framed photos instead of our good china (which we rarely use anyway). It's fun because a lot of friends who visit our house notice the display and like to look through the pictures. I put a bunch of photo albums and boxes of all different colors together (red, chartreuse, orange, platinum etc) which is colorful and looks nice... but today I checked out that Kolo Havana link in Kelli's post and saw the shelves restricted to only 3 colors (red, blue and platinum) and now I think I like the simplicity of that. So now I'm thinking of moving my photo albums and boxes to other places around the house -- several small collections in limited color ranges instead of one big colorful display all in one spot. Actually both are nice, but a change would be good. I'm so curious to know what other people are doing...

Hey Patrick, I was just thinking about what you wrote about not liking to think in terms of time -- past, present, future. (One man's organizational absolute is another man's obstacle to creativity, or something like that). I recall that Susie Cushner & Vanessa Holden had some other suggestions about how to organize photos, such as grouping by recurring events. They point out that "building a narrative around an event that repeats itself can produce dramatic contrasts and coincidences" and "highlight personal growth and new relationships." Food for thought...

...It reminds me when I was in college and visited my friend's house, in his childhood bedroom there was a large frame that contained a collection of every single school photo of my friend, kindergarten through high school. He took a lot of ribbing for that, but he didn't take the pictures down. I think like everyone else, he was drawn by curiosity to the series of photos of him, one snapshot per year, that showed how his face had changed gradually from a small child's face to an adult face over 15 years. It was interesting to see all those photos all lined lined up that way, and to study the nuanced changes from one photo to the next.

But something tells me you have some good suggestions of your own...? How have you organized your prints?

Thanks for all the great comments and recommendations! I’ll definitely be borrowing a few. I love the idea of storing the Havanas + Albums in a breakfront. So creative and unexpected (and a very helpful decorating tip for those of us who slacked on registering for china :) I totally feel BoyNamedSue’s magnetic album pain too. I think we all have a few of those hiding in our closets.

Patrick, you make a great point about the trickiness of organizing photos chronologically. Right now, my two Havanas (the red and the black) are ordered by year… but mainly because it was easiest to transfer them from envelope to box that way. Moving forward, though, I really love the idea of using a more personalized system. A box for family & friend photos, another for travel, a third for photo projects, etc. There’ll probably be a bit of overlap (since it’s rare that subject matter is that cut and dry), but I think it might make for a more interesting method than just going by date, month, and year. Sometimes it’s fun to mix it up. I adored your travel photos from your October post. I’m sure there are many more where those came from! What’s your favorite method of storing them?

haha, I don't yet store photos in havana boxes. Check out the following to see how I use my 3 Havana boxes.
